Global Cannabis Edibles Market

The cannabis edibles market includes a wide range of product types, such as cannabis-infused beverages, gummy bears, brownies, cotton candy or mints. Most of the states that have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes restrict the amount of THC to 5 or 10 milligrams per serving while higher amounts of THC are available to medical users.

In recent years, cannabis edibles rose in popularity due to their association with wellness. Unlike inhalable products, cannabis consumers avoid the risks related to smoking by consuming cannabis in food and drink form. According to New Frontier Data, in 2023, 21% of cannabis consumers reported that they use non-flower products only, up from 17% in 2022.

Moreover, 70% of 2023 survey respondents who were considering trying cannabis for the first time said that they would prefer to start with edibles. This positions edibles as the preferred product for cannabis-curious consumers, making it essential for cannabis brands to have this category in their product range in order to appeal to new customers. Some industry experts believe that this is because consumers appreciate the ease with which they can break up an edible product to receive consistent dosing per serving.

In 2023, 21% of consumers used cannabis most often in the form of edibles, and 25% reported that it was their favorite product type – both proportions were increases of around 3-4 percentage points from 2022. Industry experts believe that part of what drove the demand was the emergence of fast-acting edibles on the market which allow consumers to feel the full effect in as little as 15 minutes. A 2025 Edibles Premiumization Report from Azuca found that consumers are willing to pay 31% more for fast-acting gummies compared to other gummies.

The global cannabis edibles market was valued at $4.5 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $7 billion by 2030.

US Cannabis Edibles Market

Edibles sales grew roughly 20% year-over-year from 2019 to 2023 and represented about 12.4% of sales in the U.S. legal cannabis market, according to a report from BDSA. New Frontier Data reported that consumer spending on cannabis edibles in the United States reached more than $3.5 billion in 2023. In 2024, U.S. cannabis edible sales had an estimated value of $4.48 billion, accounting for 14% of total cannabis sales. By 2029, the category could surpass $6 billion.

The most popular product types are candy (which includes gummies) – accounting for around 79% of cannabis edible sales – followed by chocolates (6%), beverages (6%), and pills (5%). Tinctures dominated ingestible products sales in the candy-free market, with about 30% of sales, including 18% for two main kinds of tinctures – droppers and oral sprays.

According to Arcview Research, after recreational cannabis legalization, the edibles market went from $17 million to $53 million in the first 2.5 years in Colorado. In 2014 when adult-use just launched in Colorado, over 70% of sales came from dried flower; in 2016, that was down to 55%. Meanwhile, edibles more than tripled in the same period, moving from 11% to 14% of sales and capturing part of the market share that was lost by the flower category. Similarly, edibles took off in Washington state, surging by 121% within the first year of recreational cannabis sales.

In Colorado and Oregon, chocolate bars led ingestible products sales at first (in 2014 and 2016 respectively), but were then surpassed by gummies. In California, gummies led from the beginning of adult-use sales in 2017.

In most states with legal cannabis sales, edibles account for around 10%-13% though some states stand out such as Utah where edibles hold an 18% market share, Colorado (15%), and New York (14%). There seems to be a strong preference for edibles in New York as one survey of New Yorkers who consume cannabis found that 40% of them consumed edibles more than any other category.

Nearly half of cannabis consumers surveyed between April and May 2023, said they used cannabis gummies over the past six months – two percentage points higher than those who reported using flower.

Canadian Cannabis Edibles Market

In Canada, edibles can have no more than 10 milligrams of THC per package.

According to the latest government of Canada statistics, cannabis edibles rank third in total cannabis sales in Canada, representing 24% of both the medical and non-medical sectors of the legal cannabis market – nearly the same share as the cannabis extract category which accounts for 25% of total cannabis sales. This is a large increase from the 15.2% share that edibles held in 2020, and their rise comes in contrast to the fall in dried flower’s share of unit sales from 64% in 2020 to 50% in 2024. This appears to indicate that Canadian cannabis consumers are increasingly favoring the edible product form rather than flower. In 2024, 64,847,198 units of cannabis edible products were sold – up by 21% from 2023 – valued by Headset at $206.7 million.

The 2024 survey shows that while the proportion of people in Canada reporting smoking cannabis generally declined – falling from 82% in 2018 to 68% in 2024 – the proportion of people reporting consuming cannabis edibles increased from 41% to 56%, in the same period. The most commonly consumed edible types in 2024 were gummies (91%), followed by chocolate (31%), cookies (18%) and brownies (15%).

Cannabis Beverages

A product category that has recently caught attention of both consumers and industry players is cannabis beverages. Although it is still very small, accounting for around 1%-3% of total cannabis sales and 6% of cannabis edible sales in the U.S., demand for cannabis beverages has surged in recent years. This trend is driven by the global declining alcohol consumption – particularly among younger generations like Gen Z – as consumers increasingly appreciate the relaxing effect that cannabis drinks offer without the hangovers and high contents of sugar and calories that come with alcoholic beverages.

In Canada, Beverages are identified as a separated product category and are the 4th most popular product form with nearly 23% of adult-use cannabis consumers reporting using them in the past 12 months.

The cannabis beverages market was valued at around $300 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 20% to reach $900 million by 2030.
