Alberta’s retailers generated $1 billion in cannabis in 2025, solidifying the province’s position as Canada’s second-largest cannabis market – where a dense private cannabis retail network serves a population with one of the nation’s highest consumption rates.

On October 17, 2018, Canada became the first country in the G7, and the second country in the world, to legalise adult-use cannabis.

Ontario is the largest provincial cannabis market in Canada and accounts for nearly 40% of annual cannabis retail sales. Since October 17, 2018, Ontario retailers have generated in excess of $10 billion in legal cannabis revenue and sales for 2025 are estimated to be around 10% up from 2024.

Sales for 2025 were estimated to be worth more than $265 million which is around 17% up from 2024. According to the 2024-2025 Annual Report from Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, cannabis has become the corporation’s primary engine for growth; revenue from cannabis operations from FY 2024 to FY 2025 outpaced the absolute dollar growth of both liquor and casino sectors.

Since the legalization of adult-use cannabis in Canada in October 2018, annual retail sales have continuously risen – surpassing $5.6 billion by 2025.
